Restaurant: 8 Juice

Cuisine: Drinks/Desserts

Last visited: March 6, 2010
Area: Richmond, BC

4151 Hazelbridge Way – In Aberdeen Mall
Range
: $10 or less

1: Poor 2: OK 3: Good 4: Very good 5: Excellent 6: Tres Excellent!!

Food: 2.5 (Based on their #1 drink only)

Service: 4.5

Ambiance: n/a – in a food court

Overall: 2.5

Additional comments:

  • Healthy desserts/drinks
  • Fresh fruit
  • Made upon order
  • Specializes in drinks only
  • Fresh fruit juices
  • Milkshake/yogurt drinks
  • Cash only
  • Asian Jugo Juice

**Recommendation: n/a – but if you’re going to go get the #1 house special – Mango + coconut milk + tapioca + pomelo drink

This is basically the Chinese version of Jugo Juice. 8 Juice is located in the Aberdeen food court. They specialize in fresh fruit drinks and everything is blended, shaken, stirred upon order…like a bubble tea place….but they have no bubble tea.

This is pretty much one of the only places in Richmond serving mango, coconut, tapioca and pomelo drink that is so famous in Hong Kong. You can’t even find this drink at many bubble tea places because the “tapioca” is not pearls – the tapioca is “sago” which is smaller and white in colour.

In Hong Kong the most famous place to have this dessert/drink is Hui Lau Shan. I love it! If you’ve had that then this place is really not good. I was so disappointed. To be fair it’s the only thing I’ve tried on the menu…but if it’s their “No.1 House Specialty” then I don’t have much hope.

After Twittering about the mango, coconut and sago drink the last couple days I had a major craving and decided to check this place out. The guy was really nice, but unfortunately my craving is not satisfied and I don’t think it can be because I don’t know anywhere else that serves it.

On the table:

Mango, Coconut Milk, Tapioca and Pomelo Drink 2.5/6

  • It’s the “No 1 House Specialty”
  • Compared to Hui Lau Shan in Hong Kong it is not good
  • It was really watered down, frothey, but almost bland. I couldn’t taste much mango or coconut milk and it was a major 'save money' move.
  • The mango juice has a very light mango flavour and they blend it with 2% milk and a touch of coconut milk which I couldn’t taste at all.

  • There were small bits of mango in the drink, not a lot though. Some of the mango was hairy though….pieces that were too close to the seed.
  • There was even less pomelo. The pomelo is very shredded into each sliver or ‘pocket’ so you have individual “strands” of it. Pomelo is basically an Asian grapefruit. It’s sweeter and not bitter though. It’s quite neutral in flavour.
  • It’s a drink that you need to chew with all the fruit and tapioca. However the tapioca is so small you just end up swallowing them unlike the bigger black tapioca pearls.

**Recommendation: Green Tea, Taro, the gelato is great as well

The 2 constant flavours are original and green tea. This month they're featuring Rose and Taro! Very unique flavours - they change flavours quite often so you might want to call in first if you're desperate to try a certain flavour. If you can't decide, like me, they allow you to do a combination of flavours - I love that and didn't know they had that option until my recent visit there.

I increased the food rating to a 4.5, whereas the 1st review I wrote I gave it a 3. The reason is because I'm a regular there now and see how often they change their flavours. The have unique flavours that other places don't offer, so I think they deserve a 4.5. They still don't recognize me or anything, so the review is still as neutral as I can make it.

To see my review #1

On the table:
  • Rose 3/6
    • It really depends on what you like. The rose doesn't necessarily taste better than the other flavours, but it's something different.
    • It's very aromatic and tastes like rose flavoured tea, without the bitterness tea naturally has. It's a very floral flavour.
  • **Green Tea &Taro 4.5/6
    • Toppings: Coconut
    • I did save taro as my last bite, which could mean it tastes better than the green tea. It's sweeter than the green tea so maybe that's why. It tastes like taro ice cream or a taro bubble tea - so it's not real taro - which is fine with me, I like the powdered taro in bubble teas better than real taro anyways.
    • I wish their coconut flakes were softer, I feel like they've been exposed to air for a while and they're a bit crunchy or just harder.
  • Rose & Taro 4/6
    • Toppings: Coffee Crisp & Almonds
    • Yummy! This was good too. Very girly I admit.
    • The taro is sweet than the rose so it almost overpowers any flavour it's matched with.
    • The chocolate was actually good with the taro, but a little off putting (not necessarily in a bad way) with the rose. The coffee and rose flavour did have some sort of match though.
    • The almonds went great with both flavours. I like it with the rose better. So actually I wish she had put the Coffee Crisp on the taro side and the almonds on the rose side. I'll ask them to do that next time.

Ki-Isu Japanese Restaurant

Restaurant: Ki-Isu Japanese Restaurant

Cuisine: Japanese/Sushi
Last visited: October 2, 09
Area: Vancouver, BC

Price Range: $10-20

1: Poor 2: OK 3: Good 4: Very good 5: Excellent 6: Tres Excellent!!

Food: 4
Service: 4
Ambiance: 3
Overall: 4
Additional comments:
  • Heavily West coast influenced Japanese
  • Trendy, moderately priced, Japanese food in Vancouver
  • Sushi/special rolls/udon/donburi/sashimi
  • Fresh ingredients
  • Brown rice available
  • Made upon order
  • Lunch specials - $7-10
  • Attracts locals within the area
  • Outdoor seating available
  • Dine in/Take-out
  • Delivery from 5pm everyday
  • Dinner only on Sunday

**Recommendation:
Hara Maki, Healthy fried rice, Crazy Roll, Chicken Udon

A moderately priced sushi restaurant in Yaletown. It's not tradition Japanese food and I doubt all their chefs are Japanese although some maybe. It's heavily West coast influenced so you see a lot of fusion items and specialty items. There's a focus on fresh and healthy options available so you feel good after eating it. They have some creative specials (which I ordered) and I have a strong feeling that the owners are young and perhaps raised in Vancouver. (That's at least what the menu and atmosphere suggest). It's actually quite busy at lunch and dinner although I didn't need to wait for a table. For trendy presentation and this level of freshness I think it's reasonably priced.

On the table:
  • **Hara Maki 4/6
    • Fresh mango, avocado, squid, romaine, tuna, red bell pepper and cucumber rolled in rice paper. Topped with masago, salmon caviar and a wasabi salad dressing sauce. Around $6 I think.
    • This was really good, but it was hard to eat and fell apart easily because the wrapping wasn't tight enough. I really appreciated the presentation though.
    • The ingredients were nice and fresh and the texture was great. Different types of crunchiness from the variety of veggies and then you get the smooth creaminess from the avocado, mango, and tuna. The tuna was good, but not a high quality.
    • It was a little bland because it lacked a savoury note. Everything was different levels of sweetness so they needed something savoury to bring it all together. They could have achieved this by doing more with the sauce. The wasabi dressing tasted like Thousand Island dressing mixed with a little wasabi paste. I would be surprised if it came from a bottle. The dressing needed some savoury notes and was a let down for me. The roll was good though.
  • House Roll 3.5/6
    • Salmon, tuna, crab, tomago, cucumber, avocado and masago. Half $5.95 Full $9.95
    • This was a good size for a house roll, not too big and they didn't use rice to make it big. The ingredients were really fresh and you could taste it.
    • It was interesting though because I think they used a sockeye salmon for the salmon sashimi instead of regular salmon...I really appreciated that because sockeye is more expensive and tastes better. The tuna on the other hand wasn't as great in quality. The tamago was made properly too which is difficult to come by.
  • **Mixed Healthy Fried Rice 4.5/6
    • Rice, mixed greens, cucumber, chicken, sauteed carrots, cabbage and bean sprouts topped with a fried egg. Served with spicy sauce. Around $8 I think.

    • You mix everything together and you'd be surprised with how much you get. It's a pretty large bowl and it loaded with fresh ingredients. The rice is sushi rice so it was almost like eating a sticky rice bowl. The portion of each item was spot on. I really liked the thinly sliced cucumbers they added. It gave great texture to the overall dish and they even cooked up slightly with the help of the hot toppings. The hot chicken and sauteed veggies wilted the salad as you mixed it altogether so everything combines easily.
    • This would have been really tasty if the egg wasn't overcooked which made the dish more dry. The yolk is supposed to be nice and runny for this dish, it aids in the mixing and texture. It also needed a savoury sauce because nothing was seasoning except for the chicken. There was a white pepper from the chicken and a slight sweetness to the sauteed veggies, but still not enough flavour overall. It's served with a spicy sauce that doesn't have much flavour, but is just spicy. It tastes like Sambal chili sauce but looks like sweet and sour sauce.
  • **Chicken Udon 3.5/6
    • Better than most places. It's a decent size and it's loaded with big pieces of chicken. it's chunks of chicken and I think we got three pieces. They pan fry it first so it intensified the flavours. It well marinated and seasoned with white pepper so it was tasty throughout.

  • One of the first big yogurt chains to open in Vancouver

**Recommendation: Original, green tea

The original is not as tart as Tuttimelon Frozen Yogurt, I liked it better. It's a smooth almost creamy yogurt and not too watery like some places are. The chocolate is really nice and the mixed berry is a bit sweet. I always like green tea so I'm a bit bias.

They have all the standard toppings. Other toppings other places don't offer but Qoola offers are: yogurt chips and hemp seeds. They also offer flavoured mochi, which is new. They have coconut, strawberry and melon mochi...they're not good at all though. They're hard and dry, the regular mochi are way better.

On the table:
  • Green Tea 4/6
    • Toppings: Almonds

  • Green Tea 4.5/6
    • Toppings: Mochi
    • I've said it before, but the combo of mochi and green tea just go hand in hand. The sweet and chewy mochi, with that tart and pungent Matcha powder...it's great!

**Recommendation: The Eggs Sophia Wrap, Indonesian Wrap (Soups are supposed to be great, but I haven't tried)

I've been here a couple times and the food is not outstanding or anything, but it is still enjoyable. If you're looking for healthy fast food options, then try this place out. Even though it's healthy the menu still offers a lot of traditional sandwiches and comfort food mains. It's nothing gourmet, but everything is quite fresh and made upon order. Some of the ingredients like cooked/grilled veggies are pre-cooked though and then the wraps are quickly assembled. They are popular for their wraps, mainly because they're substantial in size - they don't hold out on the stuffing at all. They're wraps that you could more or less make at home, they're very simple recipes, store bought sauces. They're healthy wraps - it's good, but also expected.

I was however impressed with their menu selection because I was expecting standard wraps like chicken salad, chicken Caesar, BLT, etc. so it was nice to see something like the "Indonesian wrap" to switch things up a bit. They also offer mains like "Teriyaki Chicken" and "Curry Chicken" but they're probably far from authentic. Overall, if you're looking for affordable, healthy fast food downtown, The Dish is a solid option.

On the table:

  • **Indonesian Chicken Wrap 3.5/6
    • White chicken breast, red and green cabbage, romaine lettuce, brown rice & peanut sauce. $6.10
    • This is good, but nothing out of the ordinary when you think of a Southeast Asian style wrap. You have your peanut sauce and you're there. I'm pretty sure the peanut sauce isn't made in house though. It's just your standard peanut sauce, not spicy or anything. Maybe even a bit on the runny side. No peanut texture. However, I am pleased to say that the wrap wasn't big because of the rice - they don't cheap out on the ingredients and actually load it up with chicken and veggies. Lots of chicken!
    • The veggies were really fresh and crunchy, but the brown rice was a bit hard and dry. There wasn't a lot of rice though so it didn't bother me. It tasted exactly like the description so if you like those ingredients you'll like this wrap. It's served cold - warm may be better.

  • Pesto Parmesan Chicken Wrap 1.5/6
    • White chicken breast, romaine lettuce, sauteed zucchini, mushrooms, tomato, Parmesan and Pesto sauce. $6.10
    • Sounds better than it tastes. Oh boy they really sacrificed on the quality of ingredients and the whole thing was pretty bland. If you're going to put Parmesan in the name of the sandwich I expect actual Parmesan cheese. Unfortunately this was the powdered Parmesan cheese! As disappointed as you are in reading that imagine how disappointed I was in eating it. I wouldn't have minded paying $1 extra if they used the real deal. The powdered Parm gave the wrap a really dry quality and I felt like I was eating a cheap Caesar salad. Even a Caesar Salad at a grocery store gives shredded Parm.
    • The pesto sauce is also not made in house. I bet anything it's the pesto sauce supplied by Sysco Food Services - it's this standard pesto that restaurants will order to save time and money from making it themselves. This isn't a bad thing - but the Pesto is just not good. There's better brands out there for sure. This pesto isn't made with pine nuts, it's nut free which also means it lacks a lot of flavour! It's really runny and tastes like blended up spinach and parsley - no/little basil. Needless to say, I was really disappointed.
    • I also didn't get many sauteed mushrooms or veggies. I got one mushroom (really just one, which may have gotten in there by accident) and maybe 2 tomatoes and 4 zucchini cubes? I think all the veggies are sauteed, but they taste steamed. I don't think they add any salt or pepper when they sautee it - so they're very healthy tasting. I didn't mind, but some might. It's also served warm.
  • **The Eggs Sophia Wrap 3.5/6
    • Eggs, sundried tomato basil spread, jack cheese, sauteed mushrooms.
    • This was my favourite one of the 3. I don't have a picture because I tried it on a previous visit. For me, a breakfast wrap is more standard because you can't really change up breakfast ingredients as much as you can with lunch/dinner ingredients. You know what breakfast items taste like and what to expect - so all in all this is a hearty great tasting vegetarian wrap.

** Recommendation: Quinoa Pilaf, desserts like Tiramisu are apparently a hit, but I didn't try - I will next time

I came here with my friend who's a vegetarian - I'm not, but I like vegetarian food. I suggested this restaurant because I've always noticed it, but have never gotten the opportunity to try it (usually I'm with meat eaters). This restaurant looks like nothing special and it's busy but not super busy or anything so I never had any expectations for it. When I looked at the extensive menu I had my doubts for sure - when I see Western dishes at a traditional Chinese restaurant I tend to roll my eyes because it feels like they're trying to please everyone and there's no focus. I saw a couple dishes come out and everything looked fresh, but also very mediocre and basic. That being said, my expectations were exceeded as I am pleased to say that I was impressed with what we ordered and will return. My friend isn't a fan of imitation meats, so we stayed away from these dishes although I heard they are amazing and taste like the real deal. I can't wait to go back and try them. Surprisingly the desserts are supposed to be good too - I will try their tiramisu next time I am there. Very simple homestyle dishes made with few ingredients, that are flavourful and made upon order.

On the table:

  • **Quinoa Pilaf 6/6
    • This is almost like a healthy fried rice, but made with quinoa instead of rice.
    • Quinoa is commonly known as a grain, but it's actually a relative of the leafy greens. It's actually a seed - almost like eating cous cous, but way better in my opinion.
    • I LOVED THIS DISH! It's the best quinoa I've tried yet. It was nice and fluffy (it has to be fluffy to be good), soft and slightly crunch at the same time, they cooked it perfectly. It's so flavourful, however I think they boiled it in Knorr's chicken bouillon and seasonings. I didn't care though, it's so good. When cooked it gives off this nice delicate nutty flavour - this dish was nutty, savoury, and slightly sweet from the yellow peppers.
    • They lightly sautee it (not even fried, it's not greasy) with nicely diced veggies such as zucchini, carrots, yellow peppers and celery. The veggies are sauteed just until they start to release their sugars, but they're not overcooked at all. They're nice and tender and the size is cut perfectly to match the quinoa. It's a rather large bowl for $8.50. I could eat the whole bowl myself - soooo good! It's enough for about 5 of those Chinese bowls - you don't need to order it with any other dish, it's good on it's own. I was very impressed. I talked to the waitress and she said that people don't really order it because most Chinese people don't know what it is - but she said it's one of their specialties and she wished people knew how good it was - and it is!

  • Taro wrapped with Bean Curd 4.5/6
    • This dish is more of an appetizer. It's mashed up taro root (looks like purple mashed potatoes and tastes like a course/drier sweet potato) wrapped up in layers of rehydrated dried bean curd. They deep fry the whole thing and served it with sweet and sour sauce.
    • Taro root itself doesn't have much flavour - similar to a boiled potato. However, it's really good and has a courser texture than a potato. They used it in a very creative and inventive way. You need the sauce though because it's quite bland considering neither taro root or bean curd carries much flavour on it's own.
    • They use a Panko batter which makes this roll extra crispy! It is very crispy and deep fried in fresh oil so it has a nice golden brown colour. It's actually not greasy and I just loved the texture of this. Crispy exterior, then flaky layers, the a soft inner layer of bean curd. Then you're suddenly hit with this soft and creamy mashed up taro root inside. A bit more expensive ($11.95) because it's homemade and takes time to make and prepare. It's very nicely done and worth a try.

  • Mixed Mushrooms with Chestnuts & Baby Bok Choy 2/6
    • A popular and traditional vegetarian Chinese dish.
    • This was somewhat fresh - made upon order, but using prepackaged ingredients mixed with some fresh ingredients. It is a big portion so it is meant to be shared and would be very boring on its own. I know exactly how they made it though and have tried this dish in many variations - so it was hard for me to appreciate it, because the recipe is too basic and how you would make it at home if you were needed a go-to under 15min. meal.
    • The mixed mushrooms were those crappy canned button mushrooms and Shiitake mushrooms. I think they should have included some Enoki mushrooms - the dish was all too basic to serve at a restaurant. This dish was saucy, but not greasy. You can tell the sauce had starch as a thickener, but it was more water based than oil based. Not too salty, you feel healthy eating it. More of a dinner dish.
    • The chestnuts were preshelled and prepackaged - these are still really good though. You can buy mini packs of them at T&T or any other Asian grocery store. They make for great snacks.
    • For this type of restaurant and dish it is a bit more expensive, especially for the level of simplicity and ingredients used ($13.95) - probably wouldn't order it again.

  • Amazing gelato!

**Recommendation: I like the green tea or blueberry frozen yogurt and the gelato is pretty amazing. Really strong flavours that you can taste just from the sample. The no sugar added coconut is great (I didn't even know it was no sugar added), the Mandorla Tostata (almond gelato with almond slivers) is fabulous, and the maple walnut is the best I've tried!

The original is way too sour and tart. Blueberry is most popular, it's the sweetest (least tangy). I also really enjoyed the green tea. The mango is okay, but the mango flavour is a bit too subtle. I would go back only for the green tea, blueberry, or gelato. It really depends on what you like though. Overall the yogurt here is not bad, it's the tangy yogurt, not the TCBY kind. There are better places, like Pinkberry, it's comparable to Qoola, but 21 Choices is still the best. Qoola has better tasting frozen yogurt, but Tuttimelon does a better job with toppings (if you get the right person) - you do get quite a bit. The inside is trendy/cutsie - just like all the other frozen yogurt places that have popped up in the last little while. They also offer crepes, smoothies, gelato, and sorbet on the menu. Don't miss out on the gelato, it really is gourmet.

On the table:
  • Green Tea 3/6
    • Toppings: Mochi, Digestive cookies
    • I like the chewiness of the mochi with the crunch of digestive cookies. Go during downtime and you get big pieces of cookie, when you go during busy times you get the crumbs. For me green tea and mochi go hand in hand.
  • Green Tea 2/6
    • Toppings: Mochi, Crunchie
    • Together, not so great, but separate it was fine.
  • Blueberry 4/6
    • Toppings: Mochi, Dragonfruit
    • Looks pretty, but dragonfruit doesn't have much flavour so it was more for the texture I added it. Mochi and blueberry is really good though. I'll try it with coconut and mochi next time.
  • Green Tea 2.5/6
    • Toppings: Almonds, Mochi
    • I like the crunchy and chewy combination of almonds and mochi. But the person loading the toppings for this one didn't do a good job.

  • Crepe w/gelato 2/6 (The gelato itself is 5/6)
    • This is impossible to eat! They make the crepes upon order and you choose up to 3 toppings to put in it. They fold the toppings into the crepe and roll it up and serve it in a paper cone. Then they put a scoop of gelato (your choice) on top of the crepe. The way it's served it pretty dumb. It means you have to eat the gelato first before you can even get to the crepe and toppings - which defeats the purpose I think. I want to eat them together! It should really be served on a plate. It's so hard to eat.
The crepe is soft and flimsy so how is it supposed to hold the gelato? It barely does! The gelato just melts and it gets really messy.
    • The good: the gelato is really good. We had no sugar added coconut gelato and it was fantastic! You could never tell it was "no sugar added" - I actually didn't even know there was no sugar until the second time I went back and saw the label.
    • The crepe is flavourless, but at least it's made upon order. It doesn't stay warm because the gelato makes it cold and crispy.
